The mom life is relentless and the #blessed hashtag and calming word art often has me seeing red. Between messing up dance recital times, being late for daycare pickup, and trying not to scream with each new fit of insolence, I’m drained by the end of the day.

I lie in bed at night trying to figure out what happened to all my energy — and money.

Since I’ve always been a hustler (I’m a full-time freelance writer and I’ve also tried over 100 different side gigs), paid surveys were always a looming possibility. For online surveys and me, it was more of a matter of when I started doing them than if

Trust me, paid surveys work

Let’s cut through the bull: paid surveys work. They pay. And they’re a decent side hustle for moms who want to earn money from home — or the carpool lane.

Many articles tell you this, but I know this firsthand. Eleven years ago, I got a job in digital marketing (media buying) at the survey rewards company, InboxDollars. Several years later, it was acquired by Prodege, a market research behemoth that owns Swagbucks, MyPoints, Upromise, and several other similar survey apps.

Beyond earning a full-time salary working behind the scenes, I also earned extra money by taking surveys, sometimes clearing more than $300 a month by answering polls and completing other earning activities.

Here’s my list of paid surveys for moms — or other busy people who would like to have more money. I’ll also cover some QAs that (would-be) survey takers commonly have. Let’s dive in!

How paid surveys work

Survey sites connect big brands with real consumers to gather feedback on products, services, and marketing campaigns. By taking surveys, you’re helping to shape the products and services you use—and getting paid for your time.

Here’s the basic process:

  1. Sign up for a survey site (it’s free).
  2. Complete your profile so they can match you with relevant surveys.
  3. Participate in surveys and other activities to earn cash or points.
  4. Cash out your earnings via PayPal, gift cards, or other rewards.

Paid surveys won’t replace your income, but you can realistically earn $30 to $300 a month, or more with consistent effort.

FAQs about paid surveys

Based on my 9 years of experience working for InboxDollars and Prodege (primarily the Swagbucks brand), here are the most common questions (skepticisms) new and potential users had.

(Why) Do I have to qualify for surveys?

Survey pre-screeners, though sometimes frustrating, are vital for effective market research.

Here’s why:

  1. Brand requirements: Companies seek feedback from specific demographics. Pre-screeners determine if you match their target audience, ensuring relevant data collection.
  2. Data privacy: Platforms like InboxDollars or Kashkick may know basic details about you, but they don’t share this information directly with survey providers. Each survey collects additional confidential information to match you with appropriate surveys while safeguarding your privacy.
  3. People lie: Not you, of course, but others do. Truthful and consistent responses help survey sites align you with the right surveys. Many participants lie or make up answers to qualify for as many surveys as possible. This doesn’t work. Inconsistent responses get flagged for poor data quality, leading to fewer survey opportunities or even membership termination (i.e., getting kicked out of AttaPoll or other survey apps).
  4. Structured data needs: Market research demands specific data formats. Pre-screeners ensure your input aligns with these requirements, making your feedback valuable and actionable.

Pro Tip: Initially, you might face more disqualifications, but consistent honesty can increase your qualification rate over time. Some platforms, like Swagbucks or Survey Junkie, offer small rewards for attempting surveys, even if you don’t qualify, to keep you motivated.

Why do I get disqualified from surveys?

Disqualifications (DQs) can be frustrating — for you and for the survey app. The survey site only gets paid when you do; they want you to qualify for and complete as many as possible, but DQs are part and parcel of the survey process.

Here’s why they occur:

  1. Demographic Mismatch: Surveys target specific groups. If a brand seeks opinions from female dog owners over 35, and you’re a 25-year-old cat owner, you won’t qualify.
  2. Survey capacity limits: Each survey has a participant cap. To account for potential dropouts, surveys may accept more participants than needed. For instance, if only 10% of participants who start a survey finish it, a study needing 1,000 responses might open to 10,000 participants. This can lead to mid-survey disqualifications once the required number of responses is achieved, but it’s done to save you time and greater frustration.
  3. Inconsistent or dishonest answers: Providing conflicting information — like claiming to be a man with erectile dysfunction in one survey and a new mom needing nipple butter in another—raises red flags. Brands require accurate data, and inconsistencies can lead to disqualification and reduced survey opportunities.
  4. Poor quality answers: Some respondents will speed through surveys (selecting A, B, or C at random on every page). If someone completes a 50-question survey in 30 seconds — and the average completion time is 20 minutes —- the responses will likely be DQ’d. This will also happen if you provide gibberish (i.e., “kdljfaqklefjekl;adadadafkl”)  when answering open-ended questions.

Pro Tip: If you’re disqualified after investing significant time in a survey, contact customer support. Platforms like Swagbucks or InboxDollars may credit your account as a goodwill gesture.

How do I get my money?

It’s pretty straightforward:

  1. Reach the minimum payout threshold: Each platform has a minimum amount you need to earn before cashing out, often around $5 or $10.
  2. Verify your identity: For your first payout, you’ll need to confirm your identity, usually by submitting a government-issued ID. This is required by federal law to prevent fraud and ensure security.
  3. Request your payout: Once verified, select your preferred payout method, such as PayPal, direct deposit, or gift cards.
  4. Processing time: The first payout may take longer due to verification, typically 3–5 business days. Subsequent payouts are usually faster, often within 1–2 business days. Some methods, like physical gift cards, may take longer.

Is my data safe?

Yes, reputable survey platforms have strict privacy policies to protect your information. Your data is used to match you with relevant surveys and is not shared with third parties without your consent.

It’s always good practice to review each platform’s privacy policy to understand how your data is handled.

Why do some articles claim you can earn $50 an hour?

While some articles suggest high earnings from surveys, this is often an overestimation — if not a flat-out lie. In reality, earnings typically range from $0.25 to $5 per survey, depending on length and complexity.

Occasionally, higher-paying surveys are available, but they are rare and may require specific qualifications.

Are paid surveys a good side hustle for moms?

With realistic expectations, yes. It’s reasonable to earn an extra $30 to $300 a month. To reach higher earnings, engage with the app daily or complete high-paying offers.

For instance, signing up for services through platforms like Swagbucks can yield significant bonuses. (I once made $200 for making a single UberEats delivery.)  While surveys alone can provide modest earnings, combining them with other offers can maximize the rewards.

For example, KashKick, Swagbucks, and InboxDollars will offer members sign-up bonuses when they sign up for other earning apps, like Stash or Arrived Homes, through their platform. (I’ve signed up for both. You can read my “real person” review of Stash and the Arrived Homes app.)

Are surveys worth it?

It depends on your goals. If you have downtime, like watching TV or waiting for kids, taking surveys can be a productive way to earn extra cash. During my side hustle heyday, I would “get paid to watch Netflix.” I would earn around $100 or so a month by doing surveys on my phone and binge-watching Narcos.  (It would also work while binging Emily in Paris or Bridgerton.)

If you need more substantial work-from-home income, consider exploring freelance writing or other remote hustles

In my experience, combining surveys with other income sources can be rewarding. Paid surveys are a legitimate way for moms to earn money while staying flexible. With consistent effort, they can help cover expenses or provide a little extra for yourself. And honestly, if you’re scrolling mindlessly through your phone, why not get paid for it?
